2012 National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Honoring Paige Selenski (Col ’13) and Michelle Vittese (Col ’13)
Sunday, January 29
1:30 p.m.–3:00 p.m.
Pavilion I, West Lawn

Field hockey players Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese represented the University of Virginia on the international stage in fall 2011 as members of Team USA, the first US field hockey team to win gold at the Pan American Games. Both first-team All-Americans, Selenski and Vittese decided to take the 2011-2012 academic year off to pursue their lifelong dream of representing their country. In September 2011, the pair arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico, and helped Team USA achieve victories over Mexico, Chile, Cuba, and Canada and advance to the gold medal game against No. 1 ranked Argentina. Argentina had never lost a single contest at the Pan American Games since field hockey was added in 1987. Team USA’s 4-2 triumph in the gold medal game saw the first and last goals come from Cavaliers. Selenski scored the first goal in the 12th minute, and Vittese capped the win with a goal in the 42nd minute. With this win, the United States secured its ticket to the London Olympic Games, to be held July 27 through August 12, 2012.

Due to space constraints, the reception is by invitation only. Please RSVP by visiting bit.ly/ngwsd2012 by Friday, January 20.

Please note that Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese will be formally honored at the Women’s Basketball game against Flordia State, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Cosponsored with the Department of Athletics.
